Health Law Emphasis Curriculum

All courses in UMKC’s MLS emphasize the skills you need to understand, interpret and apply legal principles in various professional contexts.

In addition to foundational legal studies courses, an advanced ethics course, additional electives and a final capstone, MLS in health law students will choose 12 credits of courses for the emphasis:

Learning Outcomes

Students in the Master of Legal Studies program will gain a better understanding of the U.S. legal system, hone their ability to analyze and interpret legal authority, and become comfortable communicating effectively on legal matters. In addition, students who choose the Health Law emphasis will be able to:

  • Apply Health Law and Compliance Principles — Understand healthcare compliance requirements, fraud and abuse laws, and regulatory frameworks governing healthcare organizations.
  • Evaluate Ethical Issues in Healthcare — Assess complex legal and ethical questions related to patient rights, informed consent, end-of-life decision-making, and more.
  • Engage With Health Policy and Advocacy — Analyze the relationship between healthcare policy and access to care and apply that understanding to advocate for equitable, high-quality health outcomes.
